Vision and Hearing problems can influence a child’s behavior or scholastic performance.  Michigan Law requires that all children entering school be tested for vision and hearing problems prior to enrollment.  The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department operates screening services to help detect vision and hearing problems at an early age so that appropriate evaluation and treatment can be begun before significant learning delays occur.

Children are seen at all area schools, migrant clinics pre-school clinics and at summer clinics. School age screenings are done for hearing in grades:  kindergarten, second, fourth, sixth, and through referrals.  Vision screenings are done in grades: kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, at drivers training and through referrals.
